WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –Juneteenth is a celebration commemorating the date in which enslaved Africans in Texas were made aware of their freedom.
While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, the news didn’t reach Texas until 1865. So Juneteenth is now considered the day slavery officially ended in the United States.
To commemorate, there is a week long list of activities being held through the Upperman Center at UNCW and the Juneteenth Committee.
- Thursday, 6 – 8 p.m. – Black Arts Alliance Concert feat. WL2F at The Monk (417 S College Rd)
- Friday, 7 – 11 p.m. – Juneteenth Swing Dance Contest at ILA Hall
- Saturday, 12 – 6 p.m. – Juneteenth Festival Celebration at MLK Park (401 S. 8th St.)
- Sunday, 5 – 7:30 p.m. – Gullah-Geechee Film Festival at UNCW
